Is anybody else getting false positives on gmail spam filtering (i. e. legitimate messages that get put in the Spam folder)? I think I've been getting one every week or two. This is kind of annoying because the only way to find them is to at least scan the subjects in my spam folder, which is seriously depressing.

I am. The digest version of a mailing list I'm on keeps going in my spam folder, so I set up a filter with the "Never send this to spam" option checked.

I got one yesterday, but it was a questionable response to a Craigslist "housing wanted" ad. (The people claimed to have a back yard pool. My ad was for San Francisco, where half the apartments in my budget range don't even have living rooms.)

I routinely scan the subjects in my boss's gmail spam folder, which is a huge pain. I've only gotten a few false positives (ever) out of hundreds of pieces per day.

Is it possible that "back yard pool" means a puddle in the alley that runs behind the building?

I think she actually wrote "sparkling crystal clear pool" or something like that. Which is about when I started thinking it was either spam or from someone with a very tenuous grasp on reality.

I'm just bemused that I was the source of one.

(I don't use gmail; it turns out to be in some sense against the law here for me to use it for my work email, and I don't separate "home" from "work", because the university has astronomically better privacy policies than anyone else would.)

I don't think I have been. I just checked my spam folder to be sure, and that seems right. The only interesting subjects in there were "Your pork pistol won't fail" and "KKK Invitation" (which turned out to be about pork pistols rather than the KKK). The thing I find annoying is that spam that is intended for some other Indian person with a similar e-mail address to mine seems to end up in my inbox, along with kindergarten alumni messages, responses to marriage ads, contracts for work in the Middle East, and tax forms from a bank in India. I suspect now that it's actually several people whose messages I'm getting, not just one. But gmail still hasn't started sending many of them to the spam folder, even though I mark a bunch of them.

Wow. Thank you so much for posting this. I just took a romp through my spam folder and found that a lot of messages from LJ_notify were ending up there (ie notices of replies to entries/comments). And here I thought my friends just weren't feeling chatty.
